Lesson Outline: (Opening, Major Activities, Transitions, Review; Closure) Opening/Introduce Lesson Do Now Anticipatory Set: • Focus Students • State Objective • Establish Purpose • Hook /involve students! • Activate prior knowledge • Assess students Time
10 min Teacher Actions
Ask students if they know what it means to observe.
Teacher listens to suggestions from students. Make list on the board
After brainstorm, discuss how our 5 senses help us observe.
Student Actions
Students brainstorm a list. Main Activity: Instruction • Explain Concept • Refer to previous lessons • Provide Examples • Model • Use a variety of instructional strategies 5min Introduce the viewfinder and explain use.
Teacher walks around the class monitoring and assisting students how to use the viewfinder.
Ask students when they are observing. Students do free exploration using the viewfinder. Students can walk around the classroom.
Students share what they are observing using the viewfinder.
Main Activity:
Check for Understanding: Ensure students are ready for activity
• Pose Key Questions
• Ask Students to Explain Concepts
• Use active participation strategies 10 min Explain use and function of viewfinder when sketching.
Tell students about the materials they will each have at their table.
Demonstrate how to look at the picture of their trees. Show how to choose one section that they want to be their focus of their drawing. Students will each have their own picture of a tree and viewfinder.
Students go to their tables. Main Activity: Guided Practice: Students do task with teacher direction or assistance • Provide monitoring • Check for understanding • Modify/adapt for all! Tell students that they will have 1-2 minutes to look at the picture of their tree. Remind students that they will have to choose an area that they want to sketch. Circulate around the room asking students what they see.
“Now it is time for you to place your viewfinder on the part of the tree you would like to sketch. When you are done placing your viewfinder down, give me a thumbs up.”
When all students have selected the part they would like to sketch, students may begin. (Reinforce to students that they cannot move the viewfinder when they are doing their sketches. ) Students will observe the whole picture for 1-2 minutes. After that time students will have to choose a part of the picture they would like to sketch.
Students will place the viewfinder over the section of the picture they would like to sketch.
Students sketch their tree for 5-10 minutes. They are not allowed to move their viewfinder doing this time. Closure: (Debrief) • Find out what your students learned • Share work and give positive feedback • Summarize work and behavior • Set next steps After 5-10 minutes of sketching have elapsed,
“Now each of you are going to have a chance to see if you can match your classmates sketch with what part of the tree they are looking at. First, everyone has to move their viewfinder to the side.”
When you get to your classmates sketch, I want you to observe the whole tree and then look at your classmates sketch. When you think you have found the area that your classmate was sketching, place their viewfinder over the area. You cannot ask the artist for any help.
Move viewfinders off of picture and set aside. Stand up and push in chairs.
Rotate tables
Students look at the picture of the whole tree and the sketch. They try and place the viewfinder on the tree picture where they think their classmate was sketching.
Students return to their seats and check to see if their classmates placed the viewfinder in the correct location of their sketch.
Monitoring & Assessment:
How will you monitor student learning during the lesson? How will you assess student work? Throughout the lesson I will monitor the students making sure they are comfortable in holding and using the viewfinder. I will reinforce to the students that the viewfinder is a tool to help us observe the details of a certain part of an object.
I will make sure that the students are using the viewfinder correctly and sketching only what they see within the viewfinder. I will also look at the students sketches to see how accurate they were at depicting their observations. I can also asses the student observation skills to see if they are able to correctly place their classmates viewfinder on the picture of the tree.
Modifications to Address Individual Student Learning Needs
How will you modify your instruction as needed to ensure that all students meet learning outcomes?
Follow-up
Activities/
Homework How will you follow up this lesson with homework or other extension activities?
Students will go outside and sketch a tree using the viewfinder. Continued use of a viewfinder throughout the year: looking for patterns, colors, etc.
