Lesson Title: Recycled Paper
Topic: Creating recycled paper and art project
Expected Student Learning Outcomes:
What will students know and be able to do as a result of this lesson? (Be Specific) Students will be able to create new paper from recycled paper. Students will decide how to decorate their paper with a variety of natural resources (leaves, petals, etc).

Processing, Analyzing, and Responding to Sensory Information Through the Language and Skills Unique to the Visual Arts
Students perceive and respond to works of art, objects in nature, events, and the environment. They also use the vocabulary of the visual arts to express their observations.
Develop Perceptual Skills and Visual Arts Vocabulary 1.1 Recognize and describe simple patterns found in the environment and works of art.
Analyze Art Elements and Principles of Design 1.3 Identify the elements of art (line, color, shape/form, texture, value, space) in the environment and in works of art, emphasizing line, color, and shape/form.
Materials Used: What instructional materials and equipment/supplies will you use in this lesson?
30 sheets thin white paper (tissue paper works best), variety of small dried petals, leaves, stems (preferably colorful), water, 22 screens (include in FOSS kits), blotting paper and weight to dry the wet paper flat, eye droppers, food color - primary colors.

Opening/Introduce Lesson Review concepts of recycling/reusing with class. Read The Giving Tree ( Silverstein), Just a Dream (Allsburg) Discuss how even kindergarteners can create new objects using old thrown out things.

- Establish Purpose : To develop observation skills, promote creativity and produce an finished piece of art for school art auction (combining all K class products, matting and framing into one scene)
- Hook /involve students: Read books, whole class discussion, show previous students' artwork
- Activate prior knowledge: Ask how art is made, what inspires artists (students have previously watched the Eric Carle autobiography video), give time to observe a variety of art books, possibly watch KQED Spark clips of artists at work
- Assess students: Students produce a recycled piece of paper which they color with food coloring and then assemble with the whole class into a piece of art.
Time: This lesson is completed over a series of days.

Main Activity: Instruction
- Explain Concept: The recycling lesson was previously introduced to class. Concept includes reusing and recycling products.
•Teacher can begin introducing children to the various methods of papermaking throughout the ages.

- Model: Create recycled paper, dot with food coloring to paint, assemble into a class art project (the
Earth or the recycling process poster, etc)
Main Activity: Please refer to FOSS Wood and Paper Unit for Creating Recycled Paper. Once students have made the paper, dry the sheets flat and have students put food coloring with dropper on the recycled paper. Only allow one drop at a time, as color spreads quickly to cover the whole sheet. Let dry flat again. With class participation, create an art piece with all the color sheets. Possibilities include a sun, Earth, recycling process as a flow chart, etc.
Another lesson possibility if FOSS is unavailable:
What You Need:
•egg cartons
•detergent
•water
•pot
•screens
•newspaper
•any odd wool, sparkles, etc. to add to paper
•food coloring (optional)
What You Do: 1.Encourage children to tear up egg cartons.
2.Put the pieces in pot with detergent, cook on low for 2-3 hours.
3.Put in food processor, until smooth consistency.
4.Add water to mixture before and after cooking.
5.You can add a touch of food coloring or other items to enhance your paper (string, confetti dots, etc.)
6.Strain through screen until desired thickness--flip over onto newspaper, put more newspaper and towels on top.
7.Cover with heavy books, etc for 24 hours. Peel off paper and let dry for 24 more hours--can also make bowls and other fun stuff--put flat paper works the best. You can also use old newspaper and other scrap paper.

Homework
How will you follow up this lesson with homework or other extension activities? This project can be done to create individual paper art work, stationary. Variety of natural resources can be added to the paper to beautify the final project.
