Which California Academic Content and Performance Standards will your lesson address? VA 7.2.4 Develop skill in mixing paints and showing color relationships. ELA 7.1.4 Identify topics; ask and evaluate questions; and develop ideas leading to inquiry, investigation, and research. SCI 7.6.b Students know that for an object to be seen, light emitted by or scattered from it must be detected by the eye.

Lesson Outline:

Major Activities: Color Mixing- making sample colors
Transition: Journal writing; critique of color mixing discoveries & recipes; cut, sort, & record groupings: use scientific (taxonomy) & art (aesthetic) methods
Major Activities: Group Mosaic Mural using sample colors
Review: Observe, discuss with partners, critique, record observations in journal
Opening/Introduce Lesson View Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte, and other paintings by Georges Seurat
Do Now Fold 9 x 24 paper five times for 32 sections; Make a view finder by cutting a window from 4 x 6 index card
Anticipatory Set:
- Focus Students: Show students various colorful objects; Warm up activity: Students make a list of 10 - 20 color names
- State Objective: Create names without using the words dark or light
- Establish Purpose: Explore the variety of natural & man-made colors; Observe what colors are noticed; Create reproducible paint mixing recipes; Create a mural using dots of colors to create an overall image
- Hook /involve students! Go outside & observe colors from natural setting; observe colors from man-made objects
- Activate prior knowledge: Show samples of colors (examples from paper, clothing, magazine pictures)
- Assess students Time: Do Now- 2-5 min. Anticipatory set- 30 min. Three days for each major activity
Teacher Actions: Show painting examples; guide do now: show color examples; monitor warm up activity; facilitate sharing & discussion; guide students on observing natural & man made colors; establish purpose for color mixing
