Do Now
Anticipatory Set:
- Focus Students
- State Objective
- Establish Purpose
- Hook /involve students!
- Activate prior knowledge
- Assess students
Time
5 minutes Teacher Actions
Ask students to describe the parts of a tree, functions, uses.
Student Actions
Students explain what each part of the tree is called, its functions and uses Main Activity: Instruction Explain Concept
- Refer to previous lessons
- Provide Examples
- Model
Use a variety of instructional strategies 5 min Teacher models a tableau of parts of a tree Students watch and reflect after the tableau
Main Activity:
Check for Understanding: Ensure students are ready for activity
- Pose Key Questions
- Ask Students to Explain Concepts
- Use active participation strategies
Teacher gives an example of what a tree branch would say. Discuss how not to mention “your name” , ie don’t mention you are a "branch". You could say, “Wow! It sure is hard always having birds making nests on me. They always use pieces of me to make their nests.” Students say what a tree trunk would possibly say in a tableau, gather possible answers, discuss. Have students turn to a partner and model possible responses. Share out to class and discuss.
Main Activity:
Guided Practice: Students do task with teacher direction and assistance
- Provide monitoring
- Check for understanding
- Modify/adapt for all! Teacher chooses 4 students by pulling popsicle sticks. Group comes up to front of class. Students choose one tree part from a hat. "Trunk", "branches", "leaves", "roots" are written on separate pieces of paper and folded in half. Give students a few minutes to discuss what they can say and the pose the can take. Students model their part of a tree all in one scene. Individually students step out of their pose and say a few characteristics about themselves.
Closure:
(Debrief)
- Find out what your students learned
- Share work and give positive feedback
- Summarize work and behavior
- Set next steps
Monitoring & Assessment:
How will you monitor student learning during the lesson? How will you assess student work? Teacher will monitor students on rug or at seats who are watching the tableau. Note students' success in content understanding of parts of a tree.
Modifications to Address Individual Student Learning Needs
How will you modify your instruction as needed to ensure that all students meet learning outcomes? Allow students to mimic the part of the tree without using words, ie stand like a trunk, imitate a branch, etc.
Follow-up
Activities/ Homework How will you follow up this lesson with homework or other extension activities? Students will do a variety of cut and paste activities in their Science Journal Tree Books : matching the parts of a tree, labeling, coloring, gluing objects like pipe cleaners to roots, etc.
