more to come soon, but in the meantime we invite you to check out our Open.Michigan project website at https://open.umich.edu
Project Introduction
The University of Michigan Open.Michigan project is taking a particularly unique approach to Open Educational Resources. While we're working to develop a curriculum based Open Educational Resources initiative that will make University of Michigan course materials available to learners beyond the University, we also realize that OER doesn't just mean publishing course materials.
Michigan has a strong community of Open projects ranging from open source software development and the formation of open standards to open archive and open access publishing initiatives. Together, this open community supports and sustains the learning process at the University. Together, this community forms the basis of our understanding of what we mean when we talk about Open Educational Resources.
Open.Michigan is a space for communication and collaboration. Our website serves as an introduction to the projects and the partners that form the basis of our open community, but it is also a virtual forum where collaborators from across the University and the larger OER community can learn more about what's happening within the open community at the University of Michigan, connect with other projects and people, and share best practices and other resources.
dScribing - an alternative OER publishing model
In terms of preparing course materials for OER publication, this coming June the Health Sciences OER team will conduct a pilot session utilizing the dScribe publication model. This publication model builds upon a unique faculty / student educational relationship, utilizing students enrolled in a given course to gather, review, and edit course materials for publication. Student dScribes and faculty work with a software tool we have developed to manage the process of identifying, categorizing, and clearing content while taking into account issue areas like copyright, privacy, trademark, and product endorsement. The model strives to be scalable across various University departments, sustainable (by keeping costs to a minimum through an efficient and effective clearing process), and portable to other Universities and Colleges. We look forward to the opportunity to work with a new group of students and look forward to your feedback.
