LESSON PLAN FORM
Teacher's Name: Miu Lau School: Alice Fong Yu Alternation School
Grade Level of Lesson: fifth Subject: Science Date: July 23, 2010
Unit Theme/Topic: Living Science-all about plants
Lesson Title/Photosynthesis-how plants make food
Topic: What photosynthesis is
Expected Student Learning Outcomes:
What will students know and be able to do as a result of this lesson? (Be Specific) Students will be able to... 1) know about the structure of a plant cell 2) know how to make food right inside their own membrane
CA Academic Standards Addressed:
Which California Academic Content and Performance Standards will your lesson address? Life Science 2f. student know plants us carbon dioxide and energy from sunlight to build molecules of sugar and release oxygen Artistic Perception 1.2 Identify and describe characteristics of representational, abstract, and nonrepresentational works of art. creative expression 2.6 use perspective in an original work of art to create a real or imaginary scene. 2.7 Communicate values, opinions, or personal insights through an original work of art.
Materials Used: What instructional materials and equipment/supplies will you use in this lesson? Science notebook, tapes, three colors play dough, black construction papers and tooth picks.
Lesson Outline:
(Opening, Major Activities, Transitions, Review; Closure)
Opening/Introduce Lesson
Do Now Write the Photosynthesis on board/project. Have students write or draw on their science notebook. Then think, pair, and share. If they don't know, have them make a guess by look at the word.
Teacher Actions: Teacher states, "Today, we are going to learn about how plants make their own food." Teacher asks, "What are the basic needs for a plant to live?" Have students think, share with partners and share in whole group. Teacher asks, "How do they get the food?" Have students think, share with partners and share in whole class. Teacher tells, "Plants make food by themselves. Do you know where is food factory in a plant?' Have students write or draw in their notebook and then discuss. Teacher says, "yes, in their cells. Inside cells that contain the pigment chlorophyll is green. " Draw the structure of a plant cell and tell what inside a cell. Have students copy the cell and label each part. Then have them share with 3 other students. When most of students finished, teacher says, "Let find out how plants make their food. They use water from the soil and carbon dioxide gas from the air to synthesize molecules called carbohydrates. The other ingredient in the equation is energy from sunshine--photons of lights. That is why the process is called photosynthesis." Teacher will draw while s/he is giving the lecture. Teacher states, "We are going to use play dough and tooth picks to make the equation of the Photosynthesis." Divided students in group of 3-4. Tell them they have to make 6 water and 6 carbon. After they made them, they have to break them to make a sugar and oxygen. They can always refer back the poster that the teacher made. When they finished, share or gallery walk.
Student Actions
Students will listen actively.
Students will give answers--water, air, sun, and food. (Think, pair, share)
Students will share and make a guess how a plant get the food. (Think, pair, share)
Students will write or draw in their notebook.
Students will copy and share.
Students will listen.
Students will work in small group cooperatively.
Closure: (Debrief)
- Find out what your students learned: have students write down what they have learned and share with their peers.
- Share work and give positive feedback: give comments after gallery walk.
- Summarize work and behavior: praise students for their positive behavior and restates how plants make food refer back to the poster.
- Set next steps: tell student they are going to retell the photosynthesis by action.
Monitoring & Assessment:
How will you monitor student learning during the lesson? How will you assess student work? Look at students' science notebook. Observe them when they answer questions and do the art project with peers.
Modifications to Address Individual Student Learning Needs
How will you modify your instruction as needed to ensure that all students meet learning outcomes? Making model helps students to understand the concepts "Think, pair, share" helps them to improve their oral skills and cooperative learning skills. Drawing poster by teacher helps students to visualize the concepts.
Follow-up
How will you follow up this lesson with homework or other extension activities? I will give homework to review the concepts and students will retell the meanings of photosynthesis by action in next lesson before a new lesson on how plants transport their food.
