Design Lab
From OER Commons Wiki
ISKME invites Maker Faire participants to collaborate in our design lab, using digital stories and hands-on art and science materials to design an innovative school of the future. Student and Teacher project examples that integrate art, science, sustainability, and green design will inspire the creation of shareable open-source learning resources.

Identify the Challenge
Make the School of the Future
- Guiding Questions:
- What would your design for the school of the future look like?
- What would the school structure look like? Would there be classrooms?
- What subjects would your school teach, and how would they be taught?
- How would your school run? Who would be in charge? Who would teach? Who would the students be?
- Where would your school be located?
- What would you name your school?
Brainstorm Ideas
- Divide students up into groups of two to four.
- Give each group an easel pad and markers to document their design ideas using words and drawings.
- Sanchez Elementary School students brainstorm their ideas for the school of the future. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=83LOQmzc6po&feature=channel http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jDn5B10PXnI&feature=channel
- Once students have an idea or ideas they would like to prototype (create a model of) they are ready to select prototyping materials.
Select Prototyping Materials
- Prototyping materials include: pipecleaners, popsicle sticks, papertowel rolls, cardboard, foam pieces, corks, plastic containers, fabric, tape, glue, bottle caps, lids, and various salvaged materials from RAFT
Build a Prototype to represent your design ideas
- Once each group has the materials they need to build their prototypes, they can work together to make their idea come to life.
Present your Prototype Design Idea
Maker Faire partcipant presentations:
- Lexi and Lily present their prototype design idea for the School of the Future. Their design has a living roof, solar panels, and a glass floor with a river flowing underneath. The teachers supervise do it yourself learning. [1]
- The Physics Car by Shamit and Rohan. The car teaches students about motion and ejects students that misbehave. [2]
- Kio, Charolette, Iris, and Cheryl present their prototype design idea for the School of the Future, the Alien Institute Education School, where the students are dissecting bugs under the guidance of their robot teacher. [3]
- Milo presents his prototype design idea for the School of the Future, The Homework Bot. [4]
- Milo presents his prototype design ideas, The Jungle Playground and The Foam Lifeguard. [5]
- Peter presents his prototype design idea for the School of the Future, The Brain Wave Machine. [6]
- Lucy presents her prototype design idea for the School of the Future, The Science School where students learn to explode watermelons, a giant sea urchin and rubberband ball. [7]
- Sanchez Elementary School students present their prototype design idea for the school of the future. [8]
- Katie presents her prototype design idea for the School of the Future. Her design has a garden on the roof and a place to launch rockets. Her brother Ty was behind the camera recording her presentation. [9]
- Ty presents his prototype design idea for the School of the Future, The Snow Fort to study global warming. His sister Katie was behind the camera recording his presentation. [10]
- Alex presents his prototype design idea for the School of the Future. His school is powered by lightning. [11]
- Naomi presents her prototype design idea for the School of the Future, Sky School, a tree house school for special needs students. [12]
- Spencer (age 3) presents his prototype design idea for the School of the Future, a garden with strawberries and an upside down tree where students play. [13]
- Nahla presents her prototype design idea for the School of the Future, The Science School with a research library, thinking lab, and presentation stage. [14]
Teachers as Makers Academy
ISKME's Professional Development Summer Academy is an opportunity for teachers to create, share, collaborate and be inspired by experiencing DIY Projects that they can easily adapt to their teaching.
