Standards Followed for English Language Development Lessons
Each lesson was planned to follow the sequence for acquiring language and the California ELD Standards for Public Schools (June 9, 2009):

- Word Analysis
- Fluency & Vocabulary Development

- Literacy Response & Analysis

Lesson Plans & Descriptions
Weather Lesson Students use technology to investigate and predict the weather.
Commands Lesson Students use technology to investigate commands in English.
Poetry Students use technology to collaboratively learn concepts about poetry, build English vocabulary, analyze poetry, and write original poems.
Learning Goals/Objectvies
- Students develop information literacy skills.
- Students develop computer application skills: Inspiration software, keyboarding, cut & paste
- Students use academic vocabulary: compare, explain, summarize
- Students develop listening skills to comprehend weather reports.
- Students formulate narratives collaboratively using weather words and reporting skills.
- Students demonstrate speaking skills through oral reports and small group skits.
Resources
- Individual student laptops, router, Internet connection
- Course Management System or web site where assignments are posted by the teacher and for student submissions. For these lessons, SchoolLoop.com was used. This is a CMS that was purchased by the school district and available to all teachers, staff, students and parents.
- Students access their textbook, fiction, and non-fiction books online through Internet Archive.
- Word processing software. Students used Word Perfect for these lessons.
- Students learn and use the graphic organizer software application, Inspiration.
Note: Inspiration Software in not Open Source. A 30-day trial version is available online. If students have an email account, then students could sign up to use the free version of LucidChart.com. LucidChart would be preferred since it provides live collaboration.
Online Resources
- KTV2 News Weather Or any online weather reporting by local T.V. reporters.
- Edheads.org (Simulation game site for concepts in weather reporting, as well as other simulation games)
