OER's Commitment to Science Education
Increasing student participation in science education has been a long-term commitment of OER. Successful education involves increased practical engagement, which was the aim of OER Projects and Workshops. Other contributions from teachers and educators further reinforce the need for educational materials that engage students to learn and understand detailed scientific concepts.
OER Science-Related Projects & Workshops
Listed below are links to open educational resources related to science education. These include class projects and teacher workshops, all are contributions from members of OER Commons:
- SFUSD Summer Institute: Arts, Science, and Literacy July 19-23, 2010 Cal Academy of Sciences, Golden Gate Park, San Francisco, CA
- Math Bootcamp: July 6-9, 2010 Corte Madera School, 4575 Alpine Road, Portola Valley, CA
- NSTA: National Science Teachers Association Conference Workshop: STEAM: Incorporating Art into Cross-curricular Science Learning March 18-21, 2010 Philadelphia
- Sanchez School Green Lab Workshop March 11, 2010 San Francisco, CA
- Sun Curve Challenge: ISKME announces the Sun Curve Design Challenge, a partnership with INKA, the creator of the Sun Curve hydroponic garden and laboratory and ISKME's OER Commons project, to challenge teachers and students to produce new OER materials and incorporate green design thinking into the classroom.
- Science, Design, and OER Academy: Integrating and Sharing Teacher-Led Curriculum with a Multi-disciplinary approach to science inquiry, green design, food production, and OER processes in the K-12 classroom, using the Sun Curve hydroponic garden and laboratory as a point of departure and discovery.
- International OER Exchange Pilot: Our 2008 program with middle school science teachers in several countries to learn to share curriculum and student projects about climate change study.
- International OER Exchange Pilot Phase II: The Pollen Project, 2009: The next phase of our teacher exchange across the continents as we prepare to concentrate in plant biology investigation and implications for climate change.
- MetaSchool 2009 Workshop "Open Educational Resources and Climate Change Study", Crete, Greece, July 6-10, 2009. Using science resources, learning about the Collaboratory model for teaching and "doing science", and applying principles of OER to climate change study in the K-12 classroom.
- From STEM to STEAM: Incorporating the Arts and OER into Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math, 2009, an ongoing project focused on Multi-disciplinary approaches to STEM teaching and learning and the use of open content.
- BioQUEST SCOPE and OER: Exploring the Methods of SCOPE and the interactions with OER: An in-depth training with biology faculty, including video clips, on using the collaboratory model and OER to engage in investigative case-based learning, as part of the NSF-supported SCOPE project.* View How and Why of OER, a narrated slide presentation about the importance and potential benefits of OER and how to use OER Commons. The transcript is here.
- CSTA Collaborative Networking and Open Resources for Teaching Investigative Science: A presentation and interactive introduction to OER and contemporary science in the K-12 classroom, from the California Science Teachers Association, 2008 Conference.
- ISKME EdForum May 2008: "From Collaboratories to Public Space: Bringing the World to Students and Putting Classrooms in the Wild": View video clips from ISKME's 2008 EdForum that focused on authentic learning experiences in science and using technology.
